Morphometrics – the quantitative description, analysis and interpretation of shape and shape variation in biology – is a fundamental area of research. Unlike the analytical approaches, the geometric one is aimed at comparison of the shapes themselves. In this course I use a lot softwares in Morphometrics at Suny Stony Brook (all TPS series) and some other excellent softwares like MorphoJ and I also teach shape analysis with Fourier descriptions. We will focus on mostly landmark based models with both 2D and 3D structures. We will also look for the correct versions UPGMA trees and other clustering methods. If you have few experience on basic statistics do not worry we will start with basic statistics.
Not all insects are pests. Honeybees, ladybugs, ants, silkworms and praying mantis which is also known as “Kukuwazuka” that means the sprit of our ancestors in some cultures like Swahili. We will focus on the real meaning and connection of the “red jackets” also.
“R” provides a wide variety of statistical (linear and nonlinear modelling, classical statistical tests, time-series analysis, classification and clustering) and graphical techniques, and is highly extensible. It is an extremely powerful tool for all biologist and many other disciplines.
Bees & Pollination
Plants can not move actively to find their mates. So they need to transfer their pollens exactly to the right place. So they need “bees” sometimes. But who are bees? There are more than 22.000 species of bees mostly very important on pollination of various plants.
Clearly world would not be same without them. You will also learn that Einstein never said anything about the possible results of the extinction of bees.
Zoology of Invertebrates
Invertebrates are animals without a backbone or bony skeleton. This is by far the largest group in the animal kingdom: 97% of all animals are invertebrates. So far, 1.25 million species have been described, most of which are insects, and there are millions more to be discovered. The total number of invertebrate species might be 30 million, compared to just 60,000 vertebrates. So lets begin.
3D Virtual Reconstruction
A 3D virtual reconstruction of many biological and anthropological models can open a new way of thinking and vision in several projects from biology to anthropology and from forensic sciences to botany. All the 3D shapes can be converted to mathematical codes and be translated to a new form. This form can also be compared with other shapes and maybe classified. Please keep in mind that it is not easy to follow this lecture without basic knowledge of statistics and geometric morphometrics.
Pharmaceutics is the scientific discipline concerned with the process of creating the dosage form (such as a pill for oral administration or a powder for intravenous injection) of a therapeutic that is to be used by patients. It encompasses drug formulation and manufacturing. And I am mostly focusing on the later. The drug formulations need to be standardised and validation procedures should be kept up to date. On the other hand very few studies in academical life fits with the needs in the sector. With this lecture I aimed to tell my experiences in the pharmaceutics sector in which I spent many time.
Extraction is an art. I spend many years on different methodologies of extractions. I will explain how these methods change the biochemical configuration of the extracts. Basically making some tea is a non-lab extraction, a broccoli soup or an orange juice is an “extract” but where the science begins then extraction is an art. It is also important how to extract for which cytochemical is needed so you need to learn GC-MS/MS or LC-MS/MS. We will also focus on the practical knowledge on HPLC. I will also give some time for the students on the methodology of analysis of heavy metals in the daily diets of people.
ISO/IEC 17025 is useful for any organization that performs testing, sampling or calibration and wants reliable results. This includes all types of laboratories, whether they be owned and operated by government, industry or, in fact, any other organization. The standard is also useful to universities, research centres, governments, regulators, inspection bodies, product certification organizations and other conformity assessment bodies with the need to do testing, sampling or calibration. The standart has been revised in 2017.
ISO/13485:2016 Medical Devices QM
ISO 13485:2016 specifies requirements for a quality management system where an organization needs to demonstrate its ability to provide medical devices and related services that consistently meet customer and applicable regulatory requirements. Such organizations can be involved in one or more stages of the life-cycle, including design and development, production, storage and distribution, installation, or servicing of a medical device and design and development or provision of associated activities (e.g. technical support).
